It's a beer tribute to Lenny Bruce, it is Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A brewed by Shmaltz Brewing Company in Saratoga Springs New York. I have heard great things about this brewery, with plenty of awards under their belt, they are gaining a fantastic reputation for brewing some wonderful beer.
At first look I had a hard time trying to figure out what the name of the beer was. It is by far the busiest label I have ever seen on a beer bottle, ever. Bittersweet Lenny's R.I.P.A (ABV 10%) is an American double/ Imperial IPA made with Rye malt. Poured from a bottle, with a dark copper color, darker than most doubles. It had a really great head, and nice lacing.
According to the Shmaltz Brewing Company website Bittersweet Lenny is " Brewed with an obscene amount of malts and hops. Shocking flavors - far beyond contemporary community standards." I would agree. Almost a scotch malty flavor, with a good hops kick. It is sweeter than I would have expected. I am very impressed with this beer, in fact it was a joy to drink. I do have one caveat, this beer is not for the faint of heart.
Lots of flavor and with 10% ABV I didn't need more than one.
