Framing your photos

by Greg Belfrage

Today a few thoughts on the importance of framing your photos.  We're not talking about picture frames for your photos, but the visual composition of your photographs.

Framing is the technique of drawing attention to your subject by blocking other parts of the image with something in the scene, usually in the foreground.  Additional items in the foreground of your shot can also give more depth and perspective to your photos.

In the photo below, Old Prairie Homestead, the framing of the tree branches adds another layer to the photograph.  They contribute some intrigue and sense of abandonment to the old farm buildings in the distance.  In addition, the branches point directly at the subject in the heart of the photo.

Experiment with framing other objects into your photos to make them more visually interesting!
