The More Water The Better For This Kind Of Photography...

by Dave Kallaway

Kayak racing or in this case..freesyle kayaking is all about action and expression for photographers. How do you show that in your photos? First of all..get the settings figured out to "freeze frame" that water. Normally you go up to at least 1/2000th on your shutter speed..or even up to 1/4000th..depending on the daylight you have. The other key factor is looking for moments where you see peak action with water spewing everywhere and their facial expressions..the more drama in their face..the better. I normally shoot 500-800 shots in an afternoon of kayak race viewing..and by the time I dump the trial and error shots..I'm down to about 30-40 keepers. Keep shooting pics everybody!!!
