Lou Reed passed away this weekend at the age of 71. He was more than a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, he was an inspiration to countless artists. Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground will be forever remembered as pushing the boundaries, and opening up discussion on taboo subjects. Which is why Lou Reed was an artists artist; there may have been artists who were equally, or more, talented...but the ability to not care what others thought, is what made him an icon.

Taking a look at his career, here is one of his top singles to represent each decade of his incredible career:

1960s - The Velvet Underground “Sunday Morning”

1970s - Lou Reed “Walk on the Wild Side”

1980s - The Velvet Underground “Stephaine Says”

1990s - Lou Reed feat. Various Artists “Perfect Day (BBC Charity Edit)”

2000s - Lou Reed “Satellite of Love (2004 remix)”

2010s - Lou Reed and Metallica “The View”
