In our eyes, Black Sabbath helped to create a whole new genre. But still, Ozzy doesn't identify with the term 'heavy metal.' He doesn't think the words mean anything, and instead sees Sabbath as a heavier bluesy-rock band.
He told CNN, "I have never ever ever been able to attach myself to the word 'heavy metal' — it has no musical connotations. If it was heavy rock, I could get that, but the '70s was kind of like a bluesy thing, the '80s was kind of bubblegum-frosted hair, multicolored clothes and the '90s was kind of grungy."
As you could imagine, musicians tell Ozzy that Black Sabbath is the reason they picked up an instrument to begin with, and that Sabbath's "heavy metal" sound influenced their own music. Sometimes, Ozzy can hear it. But, other times "...it is just angry people screaming down a microphone!"
