Storm Thorgerson , whose distinctive artwork graced the covers of classic albums by Pink Floyd , Led Zeppelin , Peter Gabriel and countless other artists, has died. The BBC reports that he was 70.
A note on Pink Floyd's official website states, "We are saddened by the news that long-time Pink Floyd graphic genius, friend and collaborator, Storm Thorgerson, has died. Our thoughts are with his family and many friends."
Thorgerson went to school with Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and Syd Barrett . As a member of the influential graphic art group Hipgnosis [hypnosis], Thorgerson designed nearly all of Pink Floyd's album covers, including The Dark Side of the Moon , Wish You Were Here , Animals and many others.
Pink Floyd's David Gilmour added in a statement, "We first met in our early teens. We would gather at Sheep's Green, a spot by the river in Cambridge and Storm would always be there holding forth, making the most noise, bursting with ideas and enthusiasm. Nothing has ever really changed. He has been a constant force in my life, both at work and in private, a shoulder to cry on and a great friend. The artworks that he created for Pink Floyd from 1968 to the present day have been an inseparable part of our work. I will miss him."
Thorgerson also designed the covers for Peter Gabriel's first three solo albums, ...And Then There Were Three by Genesis , and Led Zeppelin's Presence and In Through the Out Door . He directed videos as well, including Yes' iconic clip for their #1 hit "Owner of a Lonely Heart."
In recent years, Thorgerson worked with younger artists, designing covers for bands like Muse , Audioslave , The Mars Volta and The Offspring .
