VERMILLION, S.D. (KWSN) – Lisa Loeffler scored a career-high 24 points as the South Dakota women’s basketball team gave Wyoming its first loss of the season with a 82-78 win in the DakotaDome on Saturday afternoon.
Loeffler shot 11-for-14 and added six rebounds. The junior’s previous career-high was 14 points against Omaha on Dec. 30 last season. Nicole Seekamp scored 18 points for her seventh double-digit effort of the season while adding six assists. Polly Harrington and Heidi Hoff both led the Coyotes (3-5) in rebounding with eight each.
Kaitlyn Mileto led the Cowgirls (4-1) in scoring with 21 points and Fallon Lewis added 14 points. South Dakota limited preseason Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Kayla Woodward to 11 points. Woodward averaged 17 points entering the game.
In the second half, South Dakota led by as many as 11 and was 16-of-29 shooting. USD was 18-of-22 at the free-throw line in the game, making more free-throws than Wyoming shot (9-of-17). South Dakota also outrebounded Wyoming 45-24.
The Cowgirls scored on six of their last eight possessions after trailing 74-64 with 2 minutes, 36 seconds remaining. They couldn’t make it a one possession game until a layup by Marquelle Dent made it 81-78 with eight seconds left. USD was 2-for-4 from the field and 4-for-7 from the free-throw line over that stretch.
South Dakota will play its third straight home game against a Mountain West Conference foe by hosting Utah State on Thursday at 7 p.m.
