Frontman Jacoby Shaddix went through a lot while recording Papa Roach ’s latest album, The Connection , dealing with bouts of suicidal depression and struggling to keep his marriage of 15 years together. The singer says that penning the single “Before I Die” was a therapeutic exercise that helped him realize what’s most important.
“I was in a place where I was the most desperate I've ever been in my life,” he tells
. “[Then] these things in my life that I'm really grateful for kept flashing through my head…my family, my kids, my wife, my spiritual life, the Papa Roach fans. All of those things are what saved me.”
Shaddix adds that he’s very happy with the “dynamic and diverse sound” of The Connection and that he’s looking forward to working on more new songs in the near future. “I feel like we landed on something special with this record,” he reveals. “The way we mixed the old school and new school elements and where we're at sonically, I want to explore this territory more and more. I want to take it deeper.”
