Lars Ulrich Says Metallica Probably Won’t Play Any Full Albums During Upcoming Orion + More Fest

Last year, Metallica thrilled fans by performing 1984’s Ride the Lightning and 1991’s Metallica, a.k.a. the Black Album , in their entirety during their inaugural Orion Music + More Festival. However, drummer Lars Ulrich says that fans shouldn't expect the band to perform any full albums during their sets at the fest’s upcoming second installment, which takes place June 8-9 at Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan.

“I think you’ve got to be careful that it doesn’t become something that people expect from you every year, especially when you only put records out every five years like we do,” Ulrich tells Revolver . “We’ll run out of records to play at some point pretty quick. I think it’s something that we’ll keep doing throughout Metallica’s next decade or so, but I don’t know if we’re going to do it at this year’s Orion Festival.”

Ulrich adds that the band will be adding something new to the festival this year: a stage that features electronic dance music. “When we played at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco in August…our kids dragged us over to the electronic tent,” he explains. “I stood on the side of the stage and watched 20,000 to 25,000 14-year-old kids go absolutely f**king apes**t to Skrillex . And so we both stood there with our kids and were like…we’ve got to bring some of that to the Orion Festival.”

With Metallica, more than 30 bands will take the stage at the fest, including headlining sets by Red Hot Chili Peppers , Rise Against , Deftones and Bassnectar . Other bands set to perform include  Silversun Pickups , Dropkick Murphys , Gogol Bordello , and Foals .
