Transient vendor season is underway

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Most transient vendors coming to South Dakota are legitimate but the state Department of Revenue advises residents to take some common-sense steps before doing business with them.

Director of the Business Tax Division, Doug Schinkel says ask for a price quote in writing, local references and if the contractor has general liability insurance, in case accidents occur on your property.

Schinkel says to ask the vendor for licensing to show that they do have a current South Dakota tax license and any city peddler's license.  Sioux Falls requires transient vendors to have a peddler's license.  He says to ask for those things up front

Schinkel says be careful about paying for work in advance.  Make sure transient vendors have paid their local suppliers.

Be completely satisfied with the work before paying the bill and don’t pay more than originally quoted.
