Tigers & White Sox Fall, Cubs Win, Whitecaps Split, Griffins Drop Game 5, Blackhawks Lose

UNDATED (WHTC) -- Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers, 6-3, in the middle contest of a three-game set . Darin Downs (0-2) took over in the fourth for Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez, who missed his last scheduled start due to shoulder stiffness, with the game tied  at  2-2.  Downs surrendered three runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief.  Jhonny Peralta had  two RBI for the  Tigers, who lost for just the third time in their last nine games.  Catch Game 3 on 1450 WHTC today.  Game coverage starts at 1:45 p.m.

Scott Feldman tossed seven innings of one-run ball to pace the Cubs to a 5-2 win over the Mets.  Feldman improved to 6-and-5 while striking out six and giving up two hits.  Feldman and Starlin Castro knocked in two runs each for Chicago, which has won the first two of a three-game series in New York.  They face each other again today.

Jason Castro and Chris Carter each lifted a solo home run to power the Astros to a 4-3 win over the White Sox.  John Danks allowed four runs in six-plus frames for the loss.  Adam Dunn hit his 18th home run of the season for Chicago, which has lost three in-a-row.

The West Michigan Whitecaps broke up a scoreless tie with a five-run sixth inning on Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps in Game 1 of a day/night doubleheader at Fifth Third Ballpark.  West Michigan (33-35) won their third straight game to keep alive aspirations of a .500 first-half finish with just two games remaining before the All-Star break.  Pitchers Jordan John and Yorfrank Lopez dominated the action on Saturday afternoon, tossing a combined four-hit shutout to lead the Whitecaps to victory. 

The West Michigan Whitecaps fell one run short of a dramatic ninth-inning comeback in an 8-7 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps during the nightcap of the doubleheader on Saturday at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (33-36) and Fort Wayne (42-26) will meet for the final game of the first half on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

The Griffins are headed back to New York, after losing to Syracuse 5-2 in Game 5.  They will take a 3-2 series lead back to the Onondaga County War Memorial for Game 6 on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Blackhawks dropped Game 2 to Boston, 2-1 at the United Center in Game Two of the Stanley Cup Final.  Patrick Sharp gave Chicago the early lead with his ninth goal of the postseason.  Corey Crawford halted 26 shots in defeat for the Blackhawks, who outshot Boston 34-28.  The two teams head to Boston for Game 3 on Monday.
