SIOUX FALLS. S.D. (KELO AM) - The Brown County commission will consider a plan to ban registered sex offenders from loitering at the county fair.
State’s Attorney Larry Lovrien says his proposal would make the fairgrounds a “community safe zone” for one week.
Lovrien says his proposal would allow sex offenders to attend specific fair events. He says a person on the registry who has tickets to a grandstand show can go watch it and leave. He says if an offender is at the fair for a legitimate purpose, such as a vendor employee, they can access the Brown County Fairgrounds.
State law forbids registered sex offenders from coming within 500 feet of community safe zones such as parks and schools.
Lovrien say the issue came up a few weeks ago when the Brown County Sheriff approached him about known sex offenders hanging around at the fair and there's nothing law enforcement could do.
