AUDIO: Officials urge preparedness for late spring flooding

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO-AM) - Weather officials say there's potential for flooding this spring due to a heavy snowpack near the headwaters of the James and Big Sioux rivers.  Meteorologist Todd Heitkamp of the National Weather Service says now is the time to prepare for potential flooding in southeast South Dakota.

"All too often, the public doesn't really think that we experience floods around here. They equate flash flooding to the Black Hills or Rocky Mountains or higher terrain," Heitkamp says.  "But, we see flooding around here almost every spring with the snow melt or in the summer time with heavy rain."

Heitkamp stresses that you should never drive on flooding roads.  Roads may be washed out and it doesn't take much water to sweep your vehicle off the road.

"Three feet of water will pick up a vehicle and make it become bouyant," Heitkamp says.
