Nirvana almost had Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd as their lead guitarist. Shepherd says that he made an impression on late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain at a party one night, which led to him being considered for a role in the group.

“I was supposed to play lead guitar for [Nirvana]...but they stayed a three-piece,” he tells Denver’s Westword . “The first time Kurt and I met, we were at a party in Olympia, and we were the two loners on the end of the couch, and there was a guitar there. I would always find a guitar at a party because I didn't like parties much. Kurt was the same way, so we wound up sharing a guitar that night.”

Shepherd adds that while he didn’t join Nirvana, he did spend some time with the band after his friend, drummer Chad Channing , became a Nirvana member in 1988.  “I just went on tour with them,” he explains. “It was a blast to get out.”
