SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) Project Blue Light is a memorial event that remembers and recognizes the fallen law enforcement officers who protect and serve our communities. The Project Blue Light memorial event will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at the Empire Mall inside the main north entrance located east of the food court.
The keynote speaker this year is South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley. Harrisburg Mayor Julie Burke-Bowen, the originator of Project Blue Light in this area, and Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether also will be in attendance. The Sioux Falls Police Honor Guard will post the colors to open the ceremony.
Project Blue Light began in 1989 when Mrs. Dolly Craig placed two blue lights in her window during the holiday season. One candle was for her son-in-law, a Philadelphia police officer who was killed in the line of duty. The other was for her daughter who was killed in a car crash. Project Blue Light has grown throughout the nation and world. During the holiday season, it burns bright in the hearts of nearly 30,000 surviving families of fallen law enforcement officers.
Locally, a Project Blue Light display and tree decorated with blue lights will be placed at the main north entrance of the Empire Mall throughout the holidays.
