The Fourth Annual Paint the Plows event will display 30 snow plows painted by area elementary schools and youth agencies this Saturday, October 12, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The plows will be on exhibit at the Empire Mall in the JCPenney north parking lot. Paint the Plows is sponsored by the City of Sioux Falls Public Works Street Division.

The students and their friends and family, as well as the general public, are welcome to come view the plows and vote for their favorite. The plows are set up to be viewed by car or on foot. During this time, teachers or other representatives of the schools/agencies can pick up their participation certificates as well.

“The painting of the plows is enjoyable for the people who paint them, but it’s also rewarding for the plow drivers during snow removal,” says Galynn Huber, Street Operations Manager. “The honks and waves from people passing by and the excitement of the kids as they see their plow go by are priceless for the drivers. They are definitely conversation pieces all over the city.”

The Street Division primes the plows, and the schools and organizations supply the paint. The participants receive the plows at the end of August after school starts and complete their works of art the first week in October. This year the program was expanded to include not only schools but also other organizations and youth programs including the McCrossan Boys Ranch and Children’s Care Hospital & School, among others.

Another feature this year is that people who attend Saturday’s event can vote for their favorite plows. The top three favorites, along with the plow painted by the Street Division themselves, will be featured in the Parade of Lights through downtown Sioux Falls this November.

The Street Division has a total of 47 plows, and next year’s goal is to have enough participants to paint each plow. If your organization would like to participate in next year’s Paint the Plows program, please call 605-367-8255.
