NEW ORLEANS, LA (KWSN) - Augustana’s men’s cross country NSIC Championship only tightened their grip on the No. 1 ranking in the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Central Region Rankings released Tuesday morning, but the women’s runner-up finish dropped them to No. 2.The men have held the top billing for the past two years, spanning 13 weekly releases from the USTFCCCA.
The Vikings dominated the 2013 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships, placing five runners in the top six. The men’s depth continued to shine through as they finished with six in the top 10 and 10 runners in the top 18 to earn All-NSIC honors.Augustana was chased by Missouri Southern for the previous five region ranking releases, but Central Missouri took over the No. 2 spot after winning the men’s Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association this past weekend.
The lone NSIC team joining the Vikings is Sioux Falls who holds onto their fourth-place ranking.The women faltered at the NSIC Championships for the first time in six seasons as they placed second to Minnesota Duluth. The Vikings were also jumped by the Bulldogs after holding the top spot in the Central Region all season.
Joining Augustana and UMD in the rankings are Winona State (fourth), U-Mary (sixth), MSU Moorhead (ninth), and Minnesota State (10th).
The Vikings host the NCAA Central Region Championships at Yankton Trails Park on Nov. 9. The top five men’s teams will be awarded berths to the NCAA Championships and the top four women’s teams will make the field as well.
