Four men arrested in a large Sioux Falls' check forgery ring

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Four men from Georgia have been arrested in what police are calling the most elaborate check forging scheme ever in Sioux Falls.

Officer Sam Clemens says the men stole volumes of mail containing checks and made exact copies leaving the payable-to lines blank.

Clemens says they recruited transients holding photo i-d’s and put their names on the checks. He says the suspects took the transients to a bank to cash the check with the tradeoff being that they could keep $100.  Clemens says the checks ranged from $1,500 to $2,000 each.

Clemens says the men have been operating in Sioux Falls for months and investigators believe they may have stolen $150,000.

Clemens says victims include mostly construction companies and bank.

Arrested are:  21 year old Xavier Shields and 25 year old DeMarcus Stevens from Decatur and 25 year old Ryan Hill and 28 year old Dwight Daniels from Atlanta.

There are charged with possession of a forged instrument with more charges likely.
