I-229 lane closures and reduced speed limits

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Beginning Wednesday morning I-229 between 18th and 26th Street will be reduced to one lane, each direction, to apply a high friction surface to reduce accidents on curves.

D-O-T Engineer Travis Dressen says motorists can expect delays during the two week project. Dressen says I-229 carries over 30,000 cars daily so when you close a lane you must expect delays.

The friction layer is applied by bonding small, rough aggregates to the road with an epoxy adhesive.  He says it's hard and durable and will improve the friction between the tire and the roadway. He says this is the first South Dakota roadway to get the treatment.Traffic will be reduced to one lane, both directions, in the work area you should expect sudden slowing, stopping or merging.

Dressen advises finding an alternate route.
