SIOUX FALLS, S.D.(KWSN) – Augustana student-athletes will begin reporting to fall camp on Saturday, Aug. 16, when the Viking football team arrives on campus. Volleyball and soccer team members are scheduled to arrive on Sunday, Aug. 17. Members of the men's and women's cross country squads will check-in on Sunday, Aug. 24, and will travel to the Black Hills the following day for the team's annual training camp trip.
Women's golf starts practice on Wednesday, Aug. 27and the men will be on campus on Sunday, Aug. 31. Second-year head coach Jerry Olszewski leads the Vikings into fall camp looking to improve on a 4-7 finish from last season. Olszewski will welcome 108 players to fall camp on Aug. 16, with the first practice scheduled that afternoon. Augustana opens the 2014 season on the road, taking on Minnesota Crookston at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6. This will be the first season-opener on the road since the 2009 season for the Vikings. The 2014 home opener for Viking football is set for Saturday, Sept. 13, against Minnesota Duluth.
The Vikings were picked to finish sixth overall and fourth in the South Division in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll announced last week. Ashley Buckley, entering her seventh season as the head coach of the Viking volleyball program, welcomes 17 players to fall camp on Sunday, Aug. 18. The Vikings finished the 2013 season 22-8 overall, including 14-6 in the NSIC, which was good for a fourth-place finish and the program's highest conference finish since 2008.
Augustana was ranked ninth in the final NCAA Central Region rankings, one spot from earning a bid to the NCAA Central Region tournament. Beginning his ninth season as the women's soccer head coach in 2014, Brandon Barkus brings 30 players into fall camp starting on Sunday, Aug. 18. The Vikings are coming off a 10-8-1 season in 2013, in which they set or nearly set a slew of offensive team records.
Augustana's 39 goals scored last season was the second most in team history. The Vikings return 19 players from the 2013 roster that finished 8-6-1 in NSIC play last season and advanced to the conference tournament for the third time in four years. Head cross country coach, Tracy Hellman, enters his 14th season at the helm of one of the strongest programs in the country. Augustana cross country arrives on campus on Sunday, Aug. 24, and will depart for its annual trip to the Black Hills on Monday, Aug. 25 to prepare for the 2014 season.
The Viking men enter the season as the five-time defending NSIC Champion and two-time defending NCAA Central Region Champion and is coming off its fifth straight top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships where the Vikings' posted the highest finish in men's history with third place. The women's team ended the year finishing second in the NSIC, third at the NCAA Central Region Championships and fifth at the NCAA Championships, marking its fourth straight top-10 finish nationally. Women's golf, under the direction of 12th-year head coach Peggy Kirby, opens practice for the 2014-15 season on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
The Vikings are coming off their fifth straight NSIC Championship and return junior Marisa Toivonen, who recorded the highest finish in school history at the NCAA Championships last season, placing fourth overall. Augustana women's golf opens the season on Sept. 6-7, hosting the Augustana Fall Invite at Bakker Crossing Golf Course. Steve Klock begins his fourth season as the head coach of the men's golf program in 2014-15 and will welcome his team to campus on Sunday, Aug. 31.
The men's golf squad placed sixth at the NSIC Championships last season, led by Clay Kopplin who finished 10th. Kopplin returns for his junior season in 2014-15 and will lead the Vikings into the season-opening tournament at the Concordia-St. Paul/Minnesota State Invite on Sept. 7-8 in St. Paul, Minn.
