SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KWSN) – University of Sioux Falls head women’s basketball coach Travis Traphagen announced the 2014-15 schedule on Wednesday. The schedule is made up of one exhibition game, five non-conference home games and a 22-game NSIC schedule.
The Cougars are coming off of a 14-15 (8-14 NSIC) season which included an impressive postseason run thanks to upset victories over St. Cloud State and No. 1 rated Wayne State before falling to eventual NSIC Tournament Champion and Elite 8 qualifier Concordia-St. Paul.
“We are excited about this year’s team as we have a lot of players returning as well as some newcomers who will have the ability to contribute,” said coach Traphagen. “We feel like our non-conference schedule will help prepare our team for competing in a great conference like the Northern Sun.”
After travelling to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on the University of Northern Iowa in an exhibition game on November 8, USF will open up the regular season with a four game homestand which is made up of games against Presentation College (November 14), Mount Marty College (November 15), Dakota State University (November 18) and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (November 22). USF’s non-conference opponents combined for a 47-64 (.423) record during the 2013-14 season.
Coach Traphagen and the Cougars will open up conference play on Tuesday, November 25 when they travel to Marshall, Minnesota to take on the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State. After a 12 day hiatus over Christmas break, the Cougars will return to action with a January 2 game against cross-town rival Augustana College at the Stewart Center. The matchup will be the first of two between the schools as USF will travel to the Elmen Center on February 14 to face the Vikings.
The Cougars will return all but three players from the 2013-14 roster as they look to improve in their third year as a member of the NSIC and the NCAA. USF returns three of their top four scorers and over 65% of their scoring from last season.
The NSIC/Sanford Health Women's Basketball Tournament will begin at home sites on February 25, with the top four seeds from each division hosting. The final three rounds of the tournament will be held at the Sanford Pentagon February 28 through March 3.
