Beef Genetics Trade Mission to Russia Cancelled

PIERRE, SD (KELO AM) - Due to uncertainties in the Russian market, the beef genetics trade mission hosted by the South Dakota Department of Agriculture (SDDA) and South Dakota Beef Breeds Council planned for October has been cancelled.

“Unfortunately, after two successful trade missions in 2012 and 2013 led by the SDDA, a return mission this fall will not happen,” said Ty Eschenbaum, SDDA ag development representative. “The focus of this trade mission was beef cattle genetics; no sanctions or bans had any direct effect on this market segment However, after evaluating the situation, the overall political climate and uncertainty makes a trip to Russia less desirable for the objectives of the mission. We will re-evaluate this trip in 2015 as we still see great opportunity in the Russian market.”

South Dakota producers and private industry should expect continued opportunities for  shipping live cattle, semen and embryos to Russia.
