Jacks top Cross Country Coaches Poll

Brookings, SD (KWSN) - The South Dakota State men’s cross country team was voted to win its third straight Summit League title, while the women’s team was tabbed as a co-favorite with South Dakota, according to a preseason poll released today.

The men’s team received four first-place votes and 34 total votes in the poll, which was voted on by the league's head coaches. South Dakota, the 2013 Summit League runner-up, was selected to finish second, totaling 31 points and receiving two first-place votes. IUPUI rounded out the top three with one first-place vote and 27 total points.  

Completing the poll were North Dakota State, Western Illinois, Oral Roberts and Fort Wayne.

On the women’s side, South Dakota and SDSU each received 43 total points, with the Coyotes totaling three first-place votes and the Jackrabbits two. Defending champion North Dakota State was edged out by the two South Dakota squads by a single point but tied the Coyotes for the most first-place votes.  

Rounding out the poll were IUPUI, Omaha, Oral Roberts, Fort Wayne and Western Illinois The full release can be found here.

The men’s team won its second consecutive Summit League title in 2013, edging out South Dakota at the championship by a single point. The Jackrabbits return 15 letterwinners and four all-Summit League honorees, 2013 All-American Trent Lusignan, Joel Reichow, Brendan Sage and Drew Kraft.

The women’s team finished second to North Dakota State last season. The team returns 13 letterwinners and all five Jackrabbits who earned 2013 all-Summit League honors, Cheyanne Bowers, Jessica Eibs, Courtney Neubert, Laura Lawton and Jenna GrossenburgAlex Suhr, Lindsey Strait and twins Kristen and Samantha Anderson offer the team depth and experience.

The cross country teams open the season Aug. 29 at the Bison Open in Fargo, N.D. at 5:30 p.m.
