Six Vikings ranked in region polls, move to 16th in Basford national team rankings

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KWSN) - In the latest NCAA and Basford rankings, Augustana has five wrestlers ranked in each and earned the No. 16 national ranking in the Basford national rankings.

TJ North grabbed the top spot at 125 pounds in both region rankings, leading the Vikings who also had three wrestlers in the Basford national rankings.North checks in at No. 3 in the 125-poun individual national rankings, owning the top spot in both the NCAA and Basford Super Region 3 rankings. The sophomore from Elk Point, Neb. owns a 24-3 record and took down previous No. 1 Alex Johns of Indianapolis on Jan. 18.

Jayd Docken owns the next-highest national ranking with a No. 6 billing at 197 pounds and owns the third spot in both NCAA and Basford Super Region 3 rankings. Docken's lone loss this season came against the current No. 5 wrestler at 197 pounds.

Sean Derry dropped out of the NCAA 184-pound national rankings two weeks ago, but he still holds the No. 7 ranking in the Basford national rankings. Derry checks in as the third wrestler in the Basford Super Region 3 rankings and No. 4 in the NCAA region listing. Derry is tied with North for the most wins this season with an equal record at 24-3.

At 133 pounds, Morgan Engbrecht has caught the eye of the Super Region, as he earned a top-eight spot in both rankings. In the NCAA Super Region 3 rankings, Engbrecht is slotted sixth and in the Basford poll, he checks in at eighth.Two more wrestlers earned top-eght spots, but couldn't duplicate their rankings in the other polls. Jeremiah Peterson's 141-pound win over No. 4 national-ranked Matt Nelson of St. Cloud State thrust him into the Basford regional rankings at No. 6. At 149 pounds, Shawn Hatlestad's hard-fought season has earned him the No. 8 ranking.

The Vikings collected 22 points in the team portion of the Basford rankings, placing them 16th among Division II wrestling teams. Notre Dame (Ohio) retains the top ranking and the Vikings are one of three Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams ranked in the top 20.

Augustana heads to Moorhead, Minn. for a Wednesday-night dual against MSU Moorhead on Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. Then, the Vikings close the season out with No. 8 Upper Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.
