A measure has been endorsed that will allow hounds to be used to hunt mountain lions outside of the Black Hills. Dogs are currently only allowed to hunt at specified times in Custer State Park, and the law actually leaves it up to State Game, Fish, and Parks, to decide when the use of Dogs will be allowed.
Currently hunting with hounds is very popular and productive in our neighboring state Montana, Where you can actually use the service of guides called houndsmen to help you bag your trophy cat.
The vote was unanimous by the Agriculture and Natural Resource committee, to allow the use of dogs while hunting mountain lions outside of the Black Hillls.
Currently, you can still only use dogs at very specific times set by state GFP within the Black Hills. Only time will tell, if South Dakota will eventually become a hound hunting state.
