Director of State Developmental Center to retire

REDFIELD, S.D.(KELO-AM)  – Dr. Ted Williams is nearing the end of a long career with the South Dakota Developmental Center (SDDC), where he has worked for nearly 40 years and served as director for more than a decade.

SDDC Assistant Director Jan Banghart will work alongside Williams until his official retirement Sept. 8, 2014, at which time Banghart will take over leadership of the facility. Banghart has served SDDC as its assistant director for eight years and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position.

“The entire department wants to wish Ted (Williams) the very best in his retirement and thank him for his dedicated service to the state of South Dakota, the Developmental Center and, most importantly, the people served there,” S.D. Department of Human Services Secretary Gloria Pearson said. “In the meantime, Jan (Banghart) will be working with Ted to achieve a smooth transition in leadership. We are truly fortunate to have such a qualified person in place to fill this role.”

“I am proud of helping to transform the South Dakota Developmental Center from a facility where people with developmental disabilities once came and lived their entire lives to one where people have the issues that brought them to SDDC addressed and then they return to live in their own communities,” Williams said.

Banghart’s experience in a variety of positions within Human Services has made her uniquely qualified for the SDDC director position. She served as a program specialist and the clinical coordinator for the Division of Developmental Disabilities and as the human rights specialist at SDDC. She began her career in a community support provider agency in 1990 where she was a direct support professional and later a case manager and family education coordinator.

“I’m truly looking forward to this new chapter in my life and know that I have some big shoes to fill,” Banghart said. “Ted is leaving a wonderful legacy of positive changes at SDDC.”
