Washington, DC— U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD), Chairman of the Senate Military Construction and VA Appropriations Subcommittee, today met with Robert McDonald, the nominee to be the next Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). If confirmed, McDonald will replace Acting VA Secretary Sloan Gibson.
“It was great to sit down and talk today with Department of Veterans Affairs Nominee Robert McDonald about the need to fix the recently discovered problems facing the VA health care system. We discussed a wide range of topics important to South Dakota veterans, including the VA claims backlog, rural health access challenges, VA infrastructure investments, and electronic health record technology. I raised concerns about the effects that the proposed VA Black Hills Health Care System realignment would have on the Hot Springs community, and Mr. McDonald confirmed that he would work with me on this important issue. It is critical we have a strong leader in place at the VA to address these challenges, and I believe Mr. McDonald is up to the task. I hope the Senate will move swiftly to confirm Mr. McDonald as the next Secretary of Veterans Affairs.”
McDonald is the former Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Procter & Gamble. A graduate of West Point, he served in the U.S. Army as a Captain, primarily in the 82nd Airborne Division and received the Meritorious Service Medal.
