Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - NWS Hydrologists say levels on the Big Sioux River in Sioux Falls fell considerably on Tuesday after cresting earlier in the day at about 1AM. Mike Gillispe said the sensors near Yankton Trail Park showed the river about a half foot above flood stage, while further downstream near Cliff Avenue the river peaked at about a foot and a half above flood stage.

Further downstream the river is cresting at near record levels. Gillispe says near Hawarden, IA the river is peaking at nearly 30 feet, which is double the flood stage level of 15 feet. Similar readings are expected downstream as the runoff continues south.

Gillispe added that here in Sioux Falls, while the levels may be dropping the river is still considered dangerous. Officials are warning residents against getting to close to the river bank, as the high flow and rate can pull you in quickly. Debris may also be flowing in the river, adding to the danger level.
