Gov. Daugaard Calling for FEMA to Assess Storm Damage in SD

PIERRE, SD (KELO AM) – Gov. Dennis Daugaard today requested that FEMA and SBA join state teams in a preliminary damage assessment of flood-related impacts to homes and businesses in three South Dakota counties because of recent heavy rains and a tornado.

The Governor requested preliminary assessments of damage to private homes and businesses in Jerauld, Lincoln and Union counties. The process, called an Individual Assistance Preliminary Damage Assessment, is the first step to determine if FEMA’s Individual Assistance program or SBA’s disaster loan program may be made available to help residents with recovery.

“We need to begin looking immediately to recovery for our citizens,’’ Gov. Daugaard said. “These preliminary damage assessments will give a clearer picture of the extent of damage to private property and businesses. The information gathered will help us determine whether federal funds or low-interest loans may be available for residents with homes and businesses impacted by the storms.’’

Daugaard asked that the assessments begin Thursday.

If the preliminary damage assessments indicate that damage is beyond the capability of local and state resources to handle, federal assistance could become available.
