WESSINGTON SPRINGS, S.D. (KELO-AM) – Minnesota Vikings’ linebacker Chad Greenway is joining the effort to help the children of Wessington Springs find some fun after the June 18 tornado destroyed homes and businesses in the community.
Greenway’s Lead the Way Foundation and KMIT Radio of Mitchell have committed to match the first $4,000 in pledges on a KMIT fund-raiser scheduled for Monday, June 30. The money will go directly to children 12 and under in the Wessington Springs area to replace toys, bikes, sports equipment and other recreational items lost in the tornado.
Greenway is a native of nearby Mt. Vernon, S.D.
“Mt. Vernon is where I grew up, too, so it’s really special that Chad is helping the kids of our community in this thoughtful, practical way,’’ said Wessington Springs Mayor Melissa Mebius. “Summer should be a time when children are active outside, and replacing some bikes and sporting equipment will be another step toward a more normal life here.’’
Persons interested in donating to the Greenway fundraiser may call 605-996-9667 or 1-800-244-5648 on Monday to make donations. Information is available through KMIT athttp://kmit.com/2014/06/26/kmit-help-the-kids.
Mebius also said the community has made incredible progress in the week since the tornado. While volunteers no longer are being actively requested, she said groups of volunteers interested in helping should contact Stacey Nelson at 605-228-0817 before visiting the town. She thanked all of the people who came to the community to help in the difficult days after the tornado.
Mebius also noted that the distribution center for donations is now located in the United Methodist Church in Wessington Spring.
The mayor said cash donations still are welcomed. Any business, organization or individual wishing to help Wessington Springs' residents impacted by the tornado is urged to donate to the Wessington Springs Relief fund by contacting the Red Cross. To donate, visit the Red Cross website at www.redcross.org and designate your donation for Wessington Springs or call 1-800-Red-Cross.
Cash donations designated to the Wessington Springs Relief Fund may also be dropped off at American Bank & Trust locations in Wessington Springs, Alpena, Huron, Wolsey, Miller, Huron-Walmart, Pierre, Mellette and De Smet.
