Noem says more must be done for Lewis and Clark

WASHINGTON D.C. (KELO-AM)  Congresswoman Kristi Noem today announced that the Bureau of Reclamation will be allotting an additional $5.2 million for the Lewis and Clark Rural Water System.  The additional funding resulted from an amendment Rep. Noem had included in the House Energy and Water Appropriations bill.  (Read more about the amendment)

“Communities in South Dakota have paid their share of the funding for this project. Now, the federal government must follow through on the commitments it’s made,” said Rep. Noem.  “This new round of federal funding is another step forward.  I am pleased we’ve been able to increase federal support for this project, but we still have a ways to go.  I will continue to work with the Bureau of Reclamation and the Office of Management and Budget to make sure the federal government continues to be a good partner on projects like Lewis and Clark and upholds their end of the bargain when promises are made and communities have already invested.”

Troy Larson, Lewis and Clark Regional Water System Executive Director said: “We appreciate the work of Congresswoman Noem to champion a provision in the House to include an additional $27 million for rural water projects, complimented by efforts in the Senate. While we still have a long way to go and had hoped that Bureau of Reclamation would put more towards Lewis and Clark, the additional $5.2 million will allow us to construct about five miles of additional pipeline that we otherwise would not have been able to complete.”

The Consolidated Appropriations Act, which passed through Congress in January 2014 with Noem’s support, allotted $3.2 million to the Lewis and Clark project, which matches the level requested by President Obama.  Rural water projects were given an additional $27 million in funding, as a result of Rep. Noem’s Energy and Water Appropriations amendment.  On January 31, 2014, Rep. Noem joined the rest of the South Dakota delegation and Members of Congress from Minnesota and Iowa on a letter to Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner Michael Connor urging the Bureau to use a portion of the $27 million of funding for Lewis and Clark. The latest announcement revealed how the $27 million will be distributed.  Other projects receiving funds included the Garrison Diversion Unit in North Dakota, Rocky Boy’s/North Central Mountain Rural Water System and Fort Peck Reservation/Dry Prairie Rural Water System in Montana, and the Eastern New Mexico Water Supply Project in New Mexico.
