Sioux City Chief speaks out on camera controversy

by

Sioux City, IA (KELO-AM) Sioux City Police Chief Doug Young says it flies in the face of inter-state cooperation for some South Dakota lawmakers to try to make it harder to collect fines from South Dakotans caught by his city's automated traffic cameras.

Chief Young says the two states should always find ways to work together, not against each other, as they did on Friday, when his police helped apprehend a Yankton, South Dakota murder suspect after a high speed chase..

Young says the cameras are not biased and do not target out-of-staters, as some South Dakota drivers contend. Chief Young says he's willing to come to Pierre and explain how the traffic camera system works, but has never been asked.

The amended legislation, back by Governor Daugaard, approved by the South Dakota Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday would prohibit the collection in South Dakota of civil fines from speeding or red light cameras in other states, including Iowa.
