Duagaard signs pledge bill into law

Pierre, SD (KELO-AM) Governor Dennis Daugaard (R) on Friday signed the Pledge of Allegiance bill into law. The pledge bill sailed through the legislature unanimously.

The law, which takes effect July 1st, requires every school in South Dakota to have the pledge recited at the start of each day. Students who did not want to recite the pledge for religious or political reasons, could opt-out.

That opt-out process is what worries the South Dakota ACLU.  Director Heather Smith says would the child still be required to stand or could the child remain seated and would the process somehow lead to the child being ostracized in any way.

Smith believes the bill sailed through the legislature in part because of all the national publicity caused by the pledge controversy in Sioux Falls, when the school board at first decided not to require the pledge in high school, but later changed it's mind.
