SIIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — It’s a new concept in helping the homeless.
Sioux Falls will soon become the second South Dakota city and latest in the nation to employ an effort known as “street outreach,” which takes a more personal, ground-level approach to helping homeless people.
The street outreach strategy uses teams of trained individuals to identify and interact with vulnerable people in the community and
try to get them the help they need, taking some of that responsibility away from law enforcement.
The homeless population in South Dakota is up nearly 50% over the past five years.
