SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — He’ll soon be 101 years old, and he carries a story of survival and triumph. Joseph Alexander will share his story at the Sioux Falls Convention center later this month. He was held in a dozen concentration camps during World War II, including some of the worst in the world – Auschwitz, Birkenau and Dachau. He describes the typical day of being surrounded by torture and death.
The sign over the gate said Arbeit Macht Frei, which means, “work sets you free.” Alexander says that turned out to be true for him. Demonstrating he was a hard worker saved him from certain death in some of the worst concentration camps in history.
He entered German concentration camps at the age of 16, leaving his family behind in Warsaw, Poland. Alexander never saw his family again, spending over five years as a prisoner in a dozen concentration camps.
Alexander was on a death march when U.S. troops liberated him. Alexander will share his story later this month at the Sioux Falls Convention center. You can find ticket information at Eventbrite.
