FARGO, N.D. (KELO.com) — A three-run first inning was the difference Tuesday night as the Sioux Falls Canaries fell 4-1 at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.
RedHawks’ right fielder John Silviano belted a three-run homerun with two outs in the bottom of the first to give Fargo-Moorhead a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
Sioux Falls got a run back with an Ozzie Martinez RBI single in the top of the third inning and loaded the bases with two outs but a sliding catch in left field ended the threat.
Fargo-Moorhead added another run in the fifth inning on a Silviano two-out base hit. But the Canaries bullpen combination of Charlie Hasty, Matt Dunaway and Mike Peterson combined to throw a one-hit shutout the rest of the way.
Sioux Falls’ best chance to rally came in the top of the sixth when the Birds had two aboard with nobody out but a flyout and a groundball double play ended the threat.
Martinez, Wyatt Ulrich, Kona Quiggle and Zane Gurwitz each had a hit with Gurwitz reaching base three times and scoring the lone Sioux Falls run. The Birds are now 7-16 and resume the three-game series Wednesday night with first pitch set for 7:02pm.
