SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — They say it’s a violation of their rights as landowners for the sake of the Green New Deal. And, it’s a storm cloud on the horizon. Summit Carbon Solutions and Heartland Navigator Greenway want to build carbon capture pipelines in this region. Already, the Summit has filed more than 80 eminent domain cases against landowners. State Representative Karla Lems of Canton is calling landowners and state officials to action.
The plan is to capture excess carbon from ethanol production and pipe it to underground repositories in North Dakota and Illinois. Opponents say the companies and other supporters of the idea are spending millions to get the projects through. South Dakota landowners feel like they’re up against giants in the dispute. The landowners say they didn’t receive any help in protecting their property rights from the legislature this year. Now, McPherson County landowner mark Lapka says other options are also failing.
Lapka and other landowners say the pipelines would carry deadly material at high pressure, which puts them at risk.
