Sep 27 (Field Level Media) – The Seattle Mariners announced shortly after Sunday’s season finale that manager Dan Wilson will not return in 2027.
Seattle was a disappointing 76-86 this season, finished third in the American League West and missed the playoffs one year after advancing to Game 7 of the 2025 ALCS before falling to the Toronto Blue Jays.
Wilson, 57, went 187-171 in two-plus seasons with the Mariners. He reportedly informed the players before Sunday’s 7-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels that he wouldn’t return.
“Collectively we failed to meet our own expectations this season,” Seattle president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said in a news release. “Dan and I both care deeply about this organization, these players, and the future of the Mariners. After much discussion it was concluded that a new direction is best for 2027 and beyond.
“I want to thank Dan for his efforts over the past two years and specifically recognize his role in our club advancing to Game 7 of the ALCS in 2025.”
Energized by Cal Raleigh’s 60-homer season, the Mariners went 90-72 and won the AL West last season before beating the Detroit Tigers in five games in the AL Division Series. Seattle had a 3-2 lead in the ALCS before the Blue Jays won the final two games.
“I’ve appreciated the opportunity to lead this team the past two years,” Wilson said in the news release. “While this season has not gone the way any of us expected, I’m proud that the players in the clubhouse showed up each day to try and compete and battle in each game they played. I’m confident that the 2026 season doesn’t accurately reflect the talent, passion and desire of our players and know that bright things are ahead for this group.”
Wilson replaced Scott Servais as manager in August 2024 despite not having previous managerial experience.
Wilson was a popular player for Seattle (1994-2005) and was an All-Star catcher in 1996 when he established career highs of 18 homers and 83 RBIs. He played in 1,251 games for the team and was a member of four Mariners postseason teams.
In August, Wilson was named to the 50 Greatest Mariners team. He also played two seasons for the Cincinnati Reds (1992-93).
Wilson is expected to be offered a job to remain with the Mariners.
“I want to add my thanks to Dan for the work he’s done as manager,” Seattle managing partner John Stanton said in the news release. “I have also spoken with Dan and made it clear that we would like to keep him in our organization. I look forward to continued conversations as we work to identify a role in which we can continue to benefit from his experience and commitment to the Mariners and our community.”
